Current Work > CaSO 4·2H2O

CaSO 4·2H2O is a meditation on the processing gypsum undergoes from its geologic state as strata to its ulterior forms as “blackboard chalk” or drywall. The duality of gypsum lies in its assigned application; it is both building material and pedagogical tool. In this manner, gypsum presents a dualism reflected in its presence in working class and academic spaces.

The forms reflect a tenacious, research-based study that coalesces as a measured poetic gesture. A product of calcification, chalk experiences a situational molding not dissimilar to human experience. The work asks the participant to reflect on their understanding of chalk, and reflect on the way it has shown up and shaped their own life.
